Should I use fluoride toothpaste for kids?
Using fluoride toothpaste for kids is a big concern for parents. You hear so much conflicting information, that it can be very overwhelming as a parent on whether to use fluoride toothpaste for your young child.
Here are the fluoride recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Fluoride toothpaste can be used at any age to prevent cavities.
- Younger than three years old – use a rice grain amount (smear layer).
- Older than age 3 Use a pea sized amount.
As a pediatric dental office, Sorenson Pediatric Dentistry, follows the AAPD guidelines below and Dr Levi Sorenson would prefer to prevent cavities rather then have to fix them.
Is fluoride toothpaste safe and necessary for a young child?
Fluoride is safe for toddlers, just remember the dosing (amount place on the toothbrush). Here is a useful list to help you have an effective and safe brushing time with your kids:
- You should be the one applying the toothpaste
- Supervise brushing time
- Help your child to check that all their teeth have been brushed (especially those tricky in between areas where plaque can get stuck)
- Teach them how to spit out the toothpaste after brushing
- Rinse to finish the brushing
