About one third of children will experience some type of dental trauma or emergency. Sports, pools, jungle gyms are some of the many places where a child can fall and injure their teeth. If your child has fallen or is in pain, it’s important to call a pediatric dentist to make sure there is no injury to the stability of the tooth and/or root. Give us a call right away. Tips on what to do if your child has their tooth knocked out
- Make sure your child is alert and stable
- Find the tooth
- Rinse gently with saline, saliva, milk or water. Do not use soap or scrub the tooth, also do not touch the root.
- Place the tooth in a clean container with milk or saline. It’s important not to store it in water.
- In the socket where the tooth was knocked out, place gauze and have your child bite gently
- Call your pediatric dentist immediately
About 90% of most dental trauma injury in children includes their two front teeth. Injury to baby teeth mainly occurs during the ages of 1-3, when a child is learning how to walk. As a child gets older, sports injuries become the leading cause of dental trauma and can be most concerning. Since the front teeth are now permanent. Even if your child doesn’t play sports, an injury can happen at any time. Bicycles are a very common place where an injury to your child’s teeth can happen.
It’s important if your child has injured their teeth to contact your pediatric dentist. An emergency room or pediatrician may not be properly equipped to deal with that type of dental trauma.

Here are more tips on how to handle dental emergencies for your child
Food stuck in teeth
When your child has something caught between their teeth, use dental floss to remove gently the item stuck between their teeth. It’s important not to use metal, plastic or any sharp tool. If you are not able to remove the object, give us a call.
Chipped, broken or fractured tooth
Has your child broken or chipped their tooth? First, rinse their mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. If you can locate the tooth fragment, save it and then call us immediately.
Loose tooth
Does your child have a loose tooth, but isn’t able to remove it on their own? Call us, there are times when a pediatric dentist needs to help the tooth exfoliate. A loose tooth should be removed to avoid being swallowed and to allow room for the permanent tooth to erupt.
Tooth pain or toothache
If your child is complaining of a toothache or pain, inspect the area where they are complaining of pain, make sure there is nothing caught between their teeth. You can use a cold compress and children’s pain relievers orally. Schedule an appointment with your pediatric dentist as soon as possible.
Swollen or bleeding gums
An injury to oral tissue, such as a puncture, laceration or wound to the inside of the mouth is considered a dental emergency. Immediately clean the area with warm water if there is bleeding, place gauze and place light pressure on the wound. Call us to schedule an appointment.
