How to maximize your dental insurance

Use it or Lose it! How to maximize your dental insurance

What does it mean to maximize your dental insurance benefits? Most dental insurance plans reset in January, which means that any unused benefits get lost. For example, if you have $800 left in your insurance maximum of $1500, on January 1st it gets reset to $1500. It is beneficial to take advantage of your dental insurance benefits and use it before you lose it!

Can you believe that the year is almost over, and the holidays are almost here! With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, there are so many things to think about and prepare. However, you only have a few more months to use your dental benefits before they expire.

Tips on how you can use your dental benefits:

1. Preventive Care Visits.

Most insurance plans offer 2 cleanings a year, if your child has only had one this year, call the office and our patient coordinators will be able to help you understand your policy and see if your child is eligible for a second cleaning before the year ends.

2. Unscheduled treatment.

Do you still need to schedule your child’s treatment? We understand that it can be a bit scary, especially if this is their first time needing dental treatment. But we promise that it will be worth it! Whether it is a cavity getting fixed, getting a tooth extracted or any other type of treatment. Not only will it relieve or prevent infection and pain but it will save you money in the long run. Click here for more information on sedation services Dr Levi Sorenson offers.

3. Sealants.

Has your pediatric dentist recommended sealants for your child. Now is a good opportunity to take advantage of this great preventive service. Find out more information on sealants here.

Understanding your dental insurance plan

  • Your dental insurance deductible. A deductible is the amount of money a patient has to pay before the insurance company will pay for dental services. If you have already “met” or paid your deductible, schedule your child’s second visit before the year ends. On calendar year plans your insurance deductible will reset in January.
  • Insurance coverage and changes. Fee increases and changes to your dental insurance plans can change dramatically from one year to the next, so it’s always better to take advantage of any benefits now.
  • Yearly maximum. Dental insurance plans have a yearly dollar maximum. This is the amount that the dental insurance will pay out in a year towards any dental costs. Once a patient has reached that “maximum” dollar amount, then they are responsible for any additional costs. The maximum can vary by dental insurance plans, but with calendar plans they most always reset and do not roll over. Which means any used benefits will be lost.
